Lagan Cement operate an environmentally and energy efficient 'state of the art' dry process cement works.
The water management on-site consists of monitoring, measurement and on-going maintenance.
The majority of water utilised at Lagan is recovered from the quarry. This water consists of rain water and groundwater ingress. Therefore, Lagan have a zero percent mains water usage.
As there is no mains water at Lagan or the surrounding properties, groundwater quantity and quality is of paramount importance. The main focus of groundwater monitoring is to ensure that there is no reduction in groundwater levels of on-site or off-site groundwater wells.
Water Management Objective & Targets
|
Water Management Objective:
Conservation of water and the minimisation of trade effluent volume discharge to local river.
Water Management Targets:
1. Quantification of water usage and volume of water emitted to local river.
2. Annual inspection of all manhole pipe connections to be conducted to prevent unnecesary water loss.
3. Measurement of groundwater wells both on and off site to determine potential impact of quarry dewatering.
Going forward (2011) Lagan will aim to reduce the volume of water (cubic meter) per tonne of cement produced.
