> Waste Minimisation
Lagan Cement has developed a War on Waste Strategy to reduce the amount waste generated onsite through the continuous improvement of the waste management practices onsite.
The main aim of the strategy is to utilise the waste management hierarchy to change from a practice of disposal to a practice of waste recycling through segregation, reuse and, ideally, prevention.
Lagan Cement waste management infrastructure is divided primarily into three streams:
1. Packaging waste (placed on market)
- Consists of three main types: pallets, paper sacks and shrink wrap all of which comes from bagged cement product sold from the site. Due to all the packaging waste being sent out onto the market, Lagan Cement is a fully compliant member of Repak, the packaging recycling organisation.
2. Packaging waste (received)
- The majority of packaging generated on site comes through the stores department, consisting primarily of cardboard boxes and pallets. All the cardboard is recycled and pallets either recycled or reused with the stores department warehouse.
3. Non packaging waste
- All waste apart from packaging waste generated at the Lagan Cement site consists of engine oil, grease, filters, batteries, fluorescent tubing, printer cartridges, and general waste. All of the above have dedicated segregation, recycling, reuse and disposal routes.
Waste Reduction Targets
|
Lagan Cement aims to reduce the quantity of waste for disposal in 2011 through implementing the ‘War on Waste’ strategy, increasing awareness about proper waste management onsite, and targeting continuous improvement in line with the Waste Management Hierarchy model.
A target for a 3% reduction on 2011 figures based on 2010 figures has been set out in our Environmental Management Programme and performance on this is reviewed on an on-going basis.
To underpin the strategy for the War on Waste, it is envisaged that a culture of waste segregation, reduction, reuse and recycling will be engrained in all Lagan Cement employees by increasing awareness and participation in improving Waste Management practices.
