Companies > Lagan Cement > Sustainable Development > Transportation

Lagan Cement is committed to minimising the environmental and social impacts of transport for the manufacturing of cement in our Kinnegad works. In order to do this, we maximise the use of locally sourced raw materials for the production process, and minimise the need to import raw materials onsite.

This strategy is achieved without compromising the strict quality requirements that Lagan Cement has set down for all of our products. Quality and raw material use is monitored on an on-going basis by our Quality Department onsite.

The movement of raw materials around the Kinnegad site are managed responsibly and the principals of our Good Neighbours Policy are also implemented to minimise any possible adverse effects on the local community.

Transportation Aims

In 2010, Lagan sourced 92% of raw materials for our eco-friendly CEM II cement from our Kinnegad site, eliminating the need to transport all but 8% of our raw materials from external suppliers.

The use of Alternative Materials is also a major component of Lagan Cement’s overall Transportation Policy and Environmental Sustainability Policy (see above) through substitution of Alternative Materials and Alternative Fuels for virgin raw materials.

In this regard, Lagan Cement has out a 5% target to increase the amount of alternative gypsum used in the manufacture of CEM II from 2010 levels. Also in 2011, Lagan intent to further displace fossil fuel use with locally sourced alternatives through the use of SRF in the Kiln burner system.
