Companies > Lagan Cement > Policies > Environment

Lagan Cement takes its environmental responsibilities extremely seriously and is committed to continually improving its environmental and sustainable development performance.

Lagan Cement received its current Pollution Prevention and Control Licence (IPPC) in May 2006. In line with the very high environmental standards required from all IPPC licence holders, this licence demands a very strong environmental focus on all aspects of operations at Lagan Cement.

For this reason Lagan Cement wasted no time in pursuing and achieving ISO 14001, which is an internationally recognised Environmental Standard, for Environmental Management Systems. This independently audited system of environmental control brings particular focus to such key areas as environmental targets and objectives, environmental planning and communications, and many other aspects which are all encompassed in our Environmental Management System.

Environmental Initiatives

Initiatives implemented under our Environmental policy include:

* A range of Sustainable Development activities which you can read about in our Sustainable Development section including introduction of alternative fuels, alternative raw materials and the production of "greener" cement, all of which contribute to reducing our carbon footprint.

* New procedures to improve dust and noise abatement still further within the IPPC licence requirements. Noise issues include: reduction in vehicle reversing tones, reducing noise from blasting/breaking and machinery operations, replacement of intercom system, etc.

* Lagan Cement annual Environmental Week, consisting of a series of informative briefings for all employees and subcontractors on good environmental practices and to emphasise the environmental duty of care which Lagan demands from all its employees.

* Launch of the Employee Environmental Handbook, distributed to all employees. The purpose of this handbook is to provide employees with a simplified summary of key requirements of both the IPPC licence and Lagans own Environmental Policies and culture.

* Sponsorship of further education students pursuing environmental studies in recognition of the important role that environmental management plays at Lagan Cement.
