Sustainable Development can be defined as development which meets the needs of today's society, without compromising the needs of future generations.

Lagan Cement has now launched its environmental vision for the next ten years. Our goal is to become the most environmentally sustainable cement manufacturing facility in Europe by the year 2020.

This sustainability will be achieved through the provision of lasting economic, environmental and social benefits to our stakeholders and the community in which we operate.

The vision is built around four key elements;

1. Lower Carbon production

2. Waste minimisation and resource stewardship

3. Biodiversity

4. Community

You can read more about our Environmental and Community activities under the Policies and Community menu headings.

Green Initiatives

In recent years we have implemented a wide range of initiatives to improve our own performance with respect to sustainable development. As part of our commitment to reduce our net CO2 emissions as required under the Kyoto Protocol and the EU Emissions Trading Directive, Lagan Cement is seeking to decouple growth in production of cement with growth in CO2 emissions through the:

* Introduction of alternative raw materials * Introduction of alternative fuels * Production of "Greener" CEM II cement

These initiatives are central to our Environmental Sustainability Programme and they have enabled us to achieve significant net CO2 reductions/tonne of cement produced.

As a nation, unless substantial reductions are achieved, the Irish government risks fines of up to 10 billion EURO by 2015. Further details are provided in this section on how Lagan Cement is playing an active role in helping Ireland achieve these objectives.
